Speech therapy for MSA and PSP

Multiple System Atrophy and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy are rare conditions. Communication changes as they develop, and the right support makes a real difference to how you and your family stay connected.

Understanding the changes

How MSA and PSP affect communication

Both conditions affect the brain systems that control speech and swallowing. Each person's presentation is different.

Dysarthria

Weakness and reduced coordination in the muscles used for speech. Speech may become quieter, slower, slurred, or harder to understand. The rate of change varies between individuals.

Voice changes

The voice may become strained, breathy, or monotone. Reduced volume is common. Exercises can help maintain speech clarity and volume for longer.

Communication planning

As the condition progresses, planning ahead becomes important: understanding what communication aids and strategies are available, and working out what will suit you.

Voice banking

Your voice, preserved

Voice banking lets you record your voice while it is still clear, so that recording can be used to create a synthetic version that sounds like you. A voice with your accent, your rhythm, your character.

This is one of the most time-sensitive things to plan for. The earlier you start, the better the result. I guide you through the process using platforms including ElevenLabs and SpeakUnique.

Common questions

Questions about speech therapy for MSA and PSP

Is it worth starting speech therapy if the condition is progressive?+

Yes. Therapy helps maintain communication for longer, supports planning for future changes, and (particularly through voice banking) gives you options before they are urgently needed. Many families find it valuable. Many clients tell me they wish they had started earlier.

What is voice banking?+

Voice banking means recording your voice while it is still clear, to create a synthetic version that can be used for communication later, if speech becomes very difficult. The result sounds like you, not a generic computer voice. I guide you through the process using platforms like ElevenLabs and SpeakUnique.

When should we start thinking about voice banking?+

As early as possible, ideally before the voice has changed significantly. The clearer the voice when you record, the better the synthetic version. It is one of the most time-sensitive aspects of communication planning.

Can family members and carers be involved in sessions?+

Yes, and it is often very helpful. Communication involves two people. Supporting a partner or family member to communicate effectively is part of the work.

Do I need a referral?+

No. You can contact me directly. There is no waiting list for private therapy.
